AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF TRAFFIC PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT INCORPORATED
AITPM TECHNICAL FORUM
Delivering "Freight Futures"
5:00pm – 6:30pm
Tuesday 1st September 2009
Department of Transport Theatrette, Level 5 / 121 Exhibition Street
Freight Futures is the Victorian Government’s long term strategy to shape the freight network for Victoria. It complements the Victorian Transport Plan, providing a more detailed action plan for delivery of freight infrastructure projects and policy development. Under Freight Futures, a Melbourne Freight Terminal Network will be established, connected by high capacity transport links on the Principal Freight Network, including the use of Higher Productivity Vehicles and new technology such as the Intelligent Access Program (IAP). The IAP is a voluntary program that provides heavy vehicles with access to the road network in return for monitoring of compliance with specific access conditions by vehicle telematics solutions.
As Victoria’s population continues to grow towards seven million, the volume of freight moving around the state and the distances travelled on the freight network will also increase. This growth will need to be effectively managed in order to maintain an efficient, reliable and sustainable freight network.
